The practice of growing crops in vertical layers or on vertically inclined surfaces using hydroponic, aeroponic, and aquaponic technologies is known as vertical farming. This is done in a controlled environment using Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) technology where different environmental factors, such as temperature, humidity, and lighting, can be adjusted to optimize plant growth.

This type of agriculture aims to meet the growing need for food production in cities while simultaneously addressing issues like the scarcity of water, the lack of arable land, and the need to lessen the carbon impact that comes with conventional farming methods. Vertical farming offers a sustainable solution for food security in the face of urbanization and climate change by enabling the production of high-quality, fresh, and nutrient-dense crops in a space- and resource-efficient manner.

Vertical farming is emerging as a promising solution to address food security and urbanization challenges in India. While still in its nascent stage, the vertical farming market is expected to experience significant growth in the coming years, driven by increasing demand for food, sustainable agricultural practices, and the rising popularity of urban farming.

According to a report by ResearchAndMarkets.com, the vertical farming market in India is projected to grow at a CAGR of around 20% from 2021 to 2026, primarily dominated by hydroponics-based systems due to their efficiency and lower operational costs.

Techniques of Vertical Farming

  • Hydroponics: One of the techniques used in vertical farming is hydroponics, which involves growing plants in a nutrient-rich water solution without the use of soil. This method has several advantages, including the elimination of soil-related cultivation problems such as soil-borne pests, diseases, and insects. Additionally, the requirement for specialized knowledge and training can result in higher labor costs and limited access for individuals without the necessary expertise.   • High Operating Cost & Maintenance: Vertical farming can have high operating costs and maintenance requirements, which can be a significant disadvantage. The specialized equipment and technology involved often require substantial capital investments, and ongoing maintenance and repair can drive up expenses further.   • Impact on Rural Communities: Vertical farming’s focus on urban areas and the need for scarce, expensive land may lead to negative consequences for rural communities. This may include the displacement of traditional farmers, loss of related jobs, and potential economic and social disruptions in rural areas.
