Marking scheme of UPSC Prelims 2023 GS Paper 1 to calculate your marks from the answer key

Total Number of Questions: The GS Paper 1 consists of 100 questions.

Total Marks: Each question carries 2 marks, making the paper worth a total of 200 marks.

Negative Marking: There is a negative marking system in place for incorrect answers. For every wrong answer, one-third (0.66) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as a penalty.

Unattempted Questions: If a candidate leaves a question unanswered or unattempted, no marks will be deducted for that question.

Multiple Answers: If a candidate marks more than one answer for a single question, it will be treated as a ‘wrong answer’, even if one of the marked options is correct. The negative marking penalty will be applied in such cases.

Therefore, you can calculate your marks by following formula:

Total Marks = (Number of Correct Answers * Marks per Correct Answer) – (Number of Incorrect Answers * Negative Marks per Incorrect Answer)
