    About Sanyukt Vimochan 2024 Exercise

    Aspects Description 
    About1. The Indian Army successfully conducted its Annual Joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Exercise, titled ‘Sanyukt Vimochan 2024’.
    2. Held in: Ahmedabad and Porbandar, Gujarat.
    3. Conducted By: Konark Corps of Southern Command of Indian Army
    4. Participants:  Included representatives from **nine Friendly Foreign Countries, including nations from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Indian Ocean Region, and Southeast Asia.
    ObjectiveTo strengthen India’s disaster response capabilities, enhance coordination among multiple agencies during natural disasters, and foster international collaboration in disaster management.
    Tabletop Exercise (TTX)1. The Tabletop Exercise (TTX) focused on the theme of a cyclone in the coastal region of Gujarat, specifically targeting the Okha-Porbandar coastline. The simulation addressed disaster scenarios.
    2.  Aim: To strengthen interagency coordination by brainstorming effective disaster relief strategies.
    3. Key outcomes: Identification of gaps in current mechanisms and the development of more robust joint disaster response protocols.
    Multi-Agency Capability Demonstration1. The Multi-Agency Capability Demonstration simulated a cyclone scenario to showcase real-world disaster response efforts.
    2. The event featured reconnaissance and surveillance of affected areas, personnel insertion for rescue operations, casualty evacuation, and the rehabilitation of affected citizens.
    Significance1. ‘Sanyukt Vimochan 2024’ marked a significant step in enhancing India’s disaster response capabilities.
    2. The exercise demonstrated the country’s preparedness to handle natural calamities efficiently, strengthened international cooperation, and showcased innovations that contribute to a self-reliant and globally collaborative disaster management framework.

    About1. Poorvi Prahar is a tri-service military drill held in the forward areas of Arunachal Pradesh.
    2. The exercise spanned from November 10 to November 18, 2024.
    ObjectiveThe primary objective is to enhance combat effectiveness, inter-service coordination, and operational readiness in the challenging mountainous terrain of the region.
    Key focus1. Integrated Joint Operations: The exercise emphasized synchronized operations between the Army, Navy, and Air Force. It tested the capability of the armed forces to operate cohesively in a multi-domain, joint command environment.

    2. Technological Advancement: Advanced military platforms and next-generation technologies were employed to simulate modern warfare scenarios. The focus was on leveraging cutting-edge tools to strengthen operational capabilities.

    3. Operational Readiness: Forces were trained to handle real-world combat scenarios, particularly in the difficult topography of Arunachal Pradesh. The exercise sought to bolster India’s defensive posture along its eastern frontier.

    Recently, the Indian Navy is to Conduct the Fourth Edition of the Coastal Defence Exercise ‘Sea Vigil-24’.

    About Exercise ‘Sea Vigil-24’

    About1. It is a Pan-India Coastal Defence Exercise from 20–21 November 2024.
    2. It is the fourth edition following the initial exercise held in 2018.
    3. It is the largest edition yet, covering India’s entire 11,098 km coastline and a vast EEZ of 2.4 million sq km. It has involvement of six Ministries and 21 different organisations and agencies.
    4. Participation from fishing communities, coastal populations, NCC cadets, and Bharat Scouts and Guides which aims to raise awareness about maritime security and engage local stakeholders.
    ObjectiveTo validate and strengthen India’s coastal defence and security mechanisms
    Focus areas1. Security of critical coastal assets like ports, oil rigs, Single Point Moorings, and Cable Landing Points.
    2. Enhanced awareness about maritime security among coastal communities, including fishing populations and students.
    FeatureIt emphasis on securing strategic locations, including ports, oil rigs, Single Point Moorings, Cable Landing Points, and other vital infrastructure. It focuses on coastal population security alongside critical infrastructure
    Significance1. It provides a holistic assessment of India’s maritime defence capabilities.
    2. It helps identify strengths and weaknesses in the current preparedness of maritime security agencies.
    3. It serves as a precursor to the Indian Navy’s biennial Theatre Level Readiness Operational Exercise (TROPEX).

  • Antariksha Abhyas – 2024

    The Defence Space Agency of India, under the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff has launched “Antariksha Abhyas – 2024.”

    1. It is India’s first space-focused military exercise. It is dedicated to assessing and addressing the growing threats to space-based assets and services.

    2. This three-day event, conducted in New Delhi from November 11 to November 13, 2024.

    3. Aim: The exercise aims to strengthen India’s defense capabilities in space and secure national strategic objectives.

    4. Purpose: It will help the defense forces understand the dependency on space-based services and assets in military operations.

    5. Focus:  Identifying potential vulnerabilities in space assets, especially in situations where space-based services may be denied or disrupted

    6. Collaborating Organizations: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) will play key roles in contributing their expertise and resources.

    7. Key Outcomes Expected: The exercise is expected to:

    i) Enhance coordination among defense, intelligence, and space research entities.

    ii) Improve operational preparedness against potential threats to India’s space assets.

    iii) Lay the groundwork for future innovation in space defense technologies and strategic resilience in space operations.

    About1. This is the 15th edition of the India-US joint Special Forces exercise VAJRA PRAHAR.
    2. The previous edition was conducted at Umroi, Meghalaya in December 2023.
    3. It is the second joint exercise between the Indian and US Army in 2024, following Exercise YUDH ABHYAS held in Rajasthan in September.

  • Singapore India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) 2024

    Why in news?

    The 31st edition of the Singapore India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) will be held from 23 to 29 Oct 2024.

    About Singapore India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) 2024

    1. This is the 31st edition of the Singapore India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX). SIMBEX began as ‘Exercise Lion King’ in 1994.

    2. It is scheduled from October 23 to 29, 2024 at Eastern Naval Command at Visakhapatnam, India.

    3. Participating Forces:Indian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN)

    4. Significance: It has evolved into a crucial bilateral maritime collaboration between the Indian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN).

    5. Structure of the Exercise:

    Harbour Phase (October 23-25) includes activities such as subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEEs), Cross-deck visits, Sports fixtures and Pre-sail briefings for personnel from both navies.

    Sea Phase (October 28-29) includes activities such as advanced naval drills, live weapon firings, anti-submarine warfare (ASW) training, anti-surface and anti-air operations, seamanship evolutions and tactical manoeuvres.

    7. Objectives

    i) Strengthening Partnerships: Aims to enhance the strategic partnership between India and Singapore.

    ii) Enhancing Interoperability: Focus on improving operational coordination between the two navies.

    iii) Maritime Domain Awareness: Foster cooperation to address common maritime challenges.

  • Indo-Oman Naval Exercise (Naseem Al Bahr)

    Why in news?

    The Indian Navy’s INS Trikand and Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft participated in the Indo-Oman bilateral naval exercise Naseem-Al-Bahr with the Royal Navy of Oman’s vessel Al Seeb off the coast of Goa from October 13 to 18, 2024.

    About Indo-Oman Naval Exercise (Naseem Al Bahr)

    1. About: The exercise was held off the coast of Goa from 13 to 18 October 2024.

    2. Exercise Participants: Indian Navy: INS Trikand and Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft and Royal Navy of Oman (RNOV): Vessel Al Seeb.

    3. Phases of the Exercise: 

    i) Harbour Phase (13-15 October 2024): It involves professional interactions between the navies, including Subject Matter Expert Exchanges and planning conferences. Also involves sporting events and social engagements for relationship building.

    ii) Sea Phase (16-18 October 2024):  Joint maritime operations included gun firings at inflatable surface targets and close-range anti-aircraft firings.

    Ships performed complex naval manoeuvres and Replenishment at Sea Approaches (RASAPS). Helicopter from INS Trikand conducted cross-deck landings and Vertical Replenishment (VERTREP) with RNOV Al Seeb.

    Indian Navy’s Dornier aircraft provided Over-the-Horizon Targeting (OTHT) data. Indian Navy Sea Riders embarked on RNOV Al Seeb for a day to enhance interoperability.

    Key Outcomes

    1. Enhanced Interoperability: The exercise promoted mutual understanding and shared best practices between both navies.

    2. Strengthened Collaboration: Fosters India’s commitment to cooperation with friendly nations in the Indian Ocean Region.

    3. Successful Engagement: The exercise was a success in achieving its objectives of building stronger naval ties and operational cohesion between the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy of Oman.
