Engineering self esteem

News:

  1. Ministry of Human Resource Development launched National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) which is a  part of India’s Massive Open Online Courses, SWAYAM.

Important Facts:

  1. About NPTEL
  • It is an initiative by  Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) for creating course contents in engineering and science.
  • The course content is based on the model curriculum suggested by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the syllabi of major affiliating Universities in India.
  • The focus areas for NPTEL project have been higher education, professional education, distance education and continuous and open learning.
  • Contents are created for 100 courses as web based supplements and 100 complete video courses, for forty hours of duration per course.
  1. Benefits of NPTEL
  • NPTEL promotes self learning which raises self esteem, which helps the learners do well further in life.
  • The  educational content is delivered through spoken tutorials is a 10-minute long audio-video tutorial, created through screen capture, with a running commentary.
  • To improve the accessibility, the spoken tutorials are dubbed  into all 22 of our languages and can can also be used offline.
  • More than 100 universities and their affiliated colleges officially use spoken tutorials.
  • Thus, spoken tutorials, funded by the HRD ministry, can raise the self esteem of its users and also its creators.
  1. Lack of Jobs
  • The lack of quality is the main reason for unemployment and not the number of engineers.
  • There is high cost of  project execution in India  because of the shortage of skilled programmers.
  • Moreover the  Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) destroys the self esteem of a lot of students, who work hard for several years, but do not get selected.
  1. Addressing the problem
  • To address such issues, a countrywide Hackathon (programming competition) was initiated by AICTE where about 50,000 students participated in 2017, producing about 50 useful solutions.
  • The newly formed National Testing Agency could also help assess the programming capability of students.
  • Coaching classes are a symptom of the problem we have in our educational system. We need a holistic approach to address it.
