DescriptionIt is a respiratory bacterial infection.
Caused byBacterium Chlamydophila psittaci (C. psittaci)
Is it contagious?1. It is basically a parrot disease. However, it can also spread to humans. It can be transmitted by inhaling particles from infected parrot feathers, their secretions or dry faeces.
2. There is a low chance of human-to-human transmission of the disease.
Affected regionsIt has affected Denmark, Netherlands, Austria, Germany and Sweden.
Symptoms1. People infected with parrot fever may have pneumonia like symptoms including cough, difficulty breathing, and chest pain.
2. Fever, muscle ache, headache and gastronomical symptoms may also appear.
Prevention1. Prevention includes proper hygiene and avoiding contact with sick birds.
2. Awareness and precautionary measures are vital to curbing transmission.
TreatmentTreatment involves antibiotics and supportive care such as adequate rest, hydration, and a nutritious diet can support the body’s immune system in fighting the infection.
