Why in News?

The Centre for Citizen Science and Biodiversity Informatics under the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) is organising Monsoon Croaks Bioblitz 2024.

About Monsoon Croaks Bioblitz 2024

1. Organized by: The Monsoon Croaks Bioblitz 2024 is organized by the Centre for Citizen Science and Biodiversity Informatics at the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI).

2. Schedules date: The event will run from June 1 to September 30, focusing on documenting the frog species in Kerala. The program is scheduled during the monsoon season, which is the breeding time for frogs.

3. Participation Details: Individuals of all ages are encouraged to participate by uploading photographs and recordings of frogs via the iNaturalist app.

4. Significance:

a) Contributions will be integrated into the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) which is an open-source database for biodiversity data.

b) The data collected will support biodiversity awareness, habitat conservation, species status assessments, scientific education, climate change research, and policymaking.

5. Status of frogs in India:

a) Frog populations are threatened by factors such as altered rainfall patterns, climate change, habitat destruction, water pollution, and road mortality.

b) Approximately 41% of global frog species are listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List.
