In 2004, the Government of India decided to create new category of languages called as “classical languages”. In 2006, it laid down the criteria for conferring the classical language status. Six languages are granted the classical language status so far.
Tamil language is a member of the Dravidian language family that is spoken primarily in India. It is the official language of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry (Pondicherry). It is also an official language in Sri Lanka and Singapore. And one of the classical languages in India recognised in 2004 by government of India.
Sanskrit is an ancient and classical language of India. The Vedas are dated by different scholars from 6500 B.C. to 1500 B.C. It belongs to the Tamil family of languages and is spoken by more than 35 million people, according to the 2011 census.
