News: India is ranked 105/127 in the Global Hunger Index 2024, which is a matter of concern. Ensuring food and nutrition security is essential to reap the benefits of demographic dividend.
1. Global Hunger Index, 2024: Global Hunger Index (GHI): It is a comprehensive tool used to measure and track hunger at global, regional, and national levels.
2. It considers 4 indicators to rank countries: A) Undernourishment B) Child Stunting C) Child Wasting D) Child Mortality
3. Child Stunting: It refers to the condition characterised by low height for age.
4. Child Wasting: It refers to the condition where the child has low weight for their height.
5. Food Security: It is defined as a condition in which all people, at all times, have reliable access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.
6. The concept of food security stands on four pillars, namely food availability, food access, utilization and stability.
7. Demographic Dividend: It refers to economic growth potential that results from a change in the age structure of a country’s population. There is higher proportion of working age population relative to dependents.
8. As per the Economic Survey (2018-19), demographic dividend would peak around 2041, when the working age population would be 59% of India’s population.
