Source: This post on Candy Leaf (Stevia) has been created based on the article “Candy leaf has Potential beyond its Natural Sweetening properties” published in PIB on 22nd October 2024.

Why in news?

Researchers from the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati explored Stevia’s medicinal properties. This study integrates network pharmacology with laboratory techniques (in vitro and in vivo) to uncover Stevia’s effects on cellular signaling.

About the Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana)

Source: PIB

1. Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) which is commonly known for its non-caloric sweetening qualities, also possesses therapeutic properties, according to new research.

2. It has potential benefits for managing endocrine, metabolic, immune, and cardiovascular diseases by influencing cellular signaling pathways.

3. Impact on Cellular Signaling Pathways: Stevia was found to inhibit phosphorylation of Protein Kinase C (PKC), a key cellular signaling pathway involved in inflammatory, autoimmune, endocrine, and cardiovascular diseases. By suppressing PKC phosphorylation, Stevia influences downstream pathways that trigger inflammation, a root cause of various health issues.

4. Potential for Treating Multiple Diseases: The research highlights Stevia’s potential to treat a range of conditions, including:

i) Endocrine and metabolic disorders like diabetes (type 1, type 2, and pre-diabetes).

ii) Autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis

iii)  Cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension and vasculopathy.

iv) Chronic inflammation-related conditions, including chronic kidney diseases.

5. Key Molecular Interaction: Active molecules in Stevia interact strongly with AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a key regulator of energy balance and inflammation. This suggests a need for further research to fully explore its therapeutic potential.

6. Economic and Agricultural Impact: Assam has emerged as a key exporter of Stevia, with cultivation recognized by the North Eastern Council as a potential driver of economic growth in northeast India due to global demand.
