News: On the National Milk Day (26 November), the Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying has released the annual publication of Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2024.
1. The Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics (BAHS) 2024, has been prepared by the Animal Husbandry Department.
2. It is based on the results of the Integrated Sample Survey (ISS), which is conducted across the country in three seasons: Summer, Rainy and Winter.
3. The ISS provides data on the production of Major Livestock Crops (MLC) such as milk, egg, meat and wool. These statistics play a vital role in the formulation of policies in the livestock sector.
4. The BAHS provides insightful data not only on the number of animals involved in milk, egg, meat and wool production but also on veterinary hospitals, polyclinic, other infrastructural details, artificial inseminations performed.
Milk, Egg, and Meat Production 2023-24 Statistics
Milk Production
- India’s milk production is estimated to be 239.30 million tonnes. Globally, India is ranked top in milk production, contributing 24% of global milk production.
- Uttar Pradesh is the highest milk producing state followed by Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Egg Production
- The total egg production in the country is estimated to be 142.77 billion. Globally, India stands second in egg production.
- West Bengal accounts for highest egg production followed by Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal and Karnataka.
Meat Production
- The total meat production is estimated to be 10.25 million tonnes.
- West Bengal is the highest meat producing state followed by Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
