News: A study on avian diversity at the Bordoibam-Bilmukh Bird Sanctuary (BBBS) has found that the number of avian species have declined by almost 72% in 27 years.
About Bordoibam-Bilmukh Bird Sanctuary
- It is a wetland situated on the boundary of Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts in Assam.
- History:
- Created during the earthquake of 1950
- Declared a wildlife sanctuary by Assam Government in 1996
- Initially, it was part of the Subansari River, which now flows 7 km away from the lake
- Climate: It experiences moist tropical climate, receiving around 2000mm of annual rainfall.
- Flora and Fauna:

- Vegetation comprises of flooded valley grasslands and wetlands.
- Fauna:
- Hosts large number of migratory as well as residential birds.
- Several globally threatened species such as Spot-billed Pelican and Lesser Adjutant can be found here.
