  • It is a coalition of leading virologists worldwide that advances understanding of how viruses cause disease and develops drugs and vaccines to prevent illness and death.
    • No single institution has expertise in all viral areas.
  • Founded in: It was founded in 2011 by Robert Gallo, in collaboration with William Hall and Reinhard Kurth.
  • Mission: To brings together medical virologists and public health experts to leverage strengths and focus global teams on key scientific problems.
  • Strength: Its strength is its global reach, scientific depth, and commitment to solving viral challenges facing humanity.
  • Extension: The Global Virus Network represents 80+ Centers of Excellence and Affiliates in 40+ countries.
  • Function:
    • It conducts international collective research, including training fellowships, and studies viruses as they manifest and spread through global cooperation.
    • It provides public education with credible information on viruses and vaccines, and supports programs for future scientists and institutions.
    • It advocates sustained funding and partnerships worldwide, and promotes more virology research and training opportunities.
