News: Operation Sagar Bandhu is in news as India rushes urgent relief supplies to cyclone-hit Sri Lanka after Cyclone Ditwah.
About Operation Sagar Bandhu
- Operation Sagar Bandhu is India’s humanitarian relief initiative providing vital Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) support to Sri Lanka after Cyclone Ditwah.
- Guided by: The operation is guided by India’s Neighbourhood First policy and Vision MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions).
- Delivered by
- First consignment: Indian Navy’s INS Vikrant and INS Udaygiri delivered about 20 tons of relief material to Sri Lanka.
- Second consignment: An Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft delivered nearly 12 tons of humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka.

- Cyclonic Storm Ditwah is a tropical cyclone that brought heavy rains and floods to Sri Lanka and South India.
- Formation: It formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka’s southeastern coast.
- Naming: It was named Ditwah by Yemen, after the Detwah Lagoon on Socotra Island.
