  1. The recent heavy rainfall and hailstorms in Punjab and Haryana has damaged standing wheat crops and could also lead to a delay in harvesting of the wheat. Punjab and Haryana are key wheat producing states in India.
  2. Wheat is the main Rabi crop in India. It is sown between late October and December; while the harvesting starts from April onwards. The Rabi cropping season extends from October-March (winter).
  3. In India, there are two major cropping seasons: a) Kharif (July –October) and b) Rabi. Another cropping season is Zaid i.e. summer season (March to June).
