  1. Power Resources (Energy Security)

Trend: Shift from “Thermal Dependence” to “Renewable Mix” and “Green Hydrogen.”

A. Conventional Power (Thermal)

  • Status: Thermal power constitutes ~60% of UP’s installed capacity.
  • Key Projects:
    • Obra ‘C’ (2×660 MW): Supercritical technology operationalized in Sonbhadra.
    • Jawaharpur (Etah) & Ghatampur (Kanpur): Recently commissioned to meet peak demand (which crossed 30,000 MW in summer 2024).
    • Coal Source: Singrauli Coalfields (Sonbhadra) – “Energy Capital of India.”

B. Renewable Energy (The Green Shift)

  • UP Solar Energy Policy 2022:
    • Target: 22,000 MW (22 GW) by 2026-27.
    • Strategy: Solar Parks in Bundelkhand (Jhansi/Lalitpur), Solarization of 10 Lakh farm pumps (PM-KUSUM), and Solar Cities (Ayodhya/Varanasi).
  • UP Green Hydrogen Policy 2024:
    • Goal: Production of 1 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) of Green Hydrogen/Ammonia by 2028.
    • Incentives: 50% exemption on intra-state transmission charges and 100% exemption on electricity duty for 10 years.

Current Affairs Linkage :

  • PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: UP launched a massive campaign to saturate 25 Lakh households with rooftop solar, offering additional state subsidy (top-up on Central subsidy).
  • Semiconductor Power: On Jan 7, 2026, the UP Cabinet approved “Dual Grid Network” provisions for upcoming Semiconductor Fabrication units to ensure 24×7 uninterrupted power.

Trend: “Expressway Economy” and “Next-Gen Mobility (RRTS).”

A. Transport Infrastructure

  • Expressways:13 Expressways.
  • Air Connectivity: 5 International Airports
  • Rail & Metro: RRTS: Metro

B. Industrial Infrastructure

  • Defense Corridor: 6 Nodes (Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, Chitrakoot, Kanpur, Lucknow).
    • Update: Adani Ammunition Complex (Kanpur) and BrahMos Unit (Lucknow) are active.
  • Multi-Modal Logistics: Dadri (Greater Noida) serves as the junction of Eastern & Western DFCs.

Trend: “Policy-Driven Growth” and “High-Tech Manufacturing.”

A. Policy Framework

  • UP Semiconductor Policy 2024:
    • Incentives: 50% additional capital subsidy (on top of Center’s PLI), 75% land rebate, and stamp duty exemption.
    • Status: Attracted proposals from Hiranandani Group (Tarq) in YEIDA.
  • UP FDI Policy 2024: First state to offer “Front-End Land Subsidy” (up to 80%) for Fortune 500 companies.

B. Key Sectors

  • MSME & ODOP:
    • Base: 90 Lakh+ MSMEs (highest in India).
    • Export: ODOP exports crossed ₹1.75 Lakh Crore, with districts like Moradabad (Brass) and Bhadohi (Carpet) leading.
  • New Industrial Cities:
    • BIDA (Bundelkhand Industrial Development Authority): A new industrial township in Jhansi (6,000 hectares) to anchor the Defense Corridor.

C. Investment Facilitation

  • Nivesh Mitra: Single Window Portal integrating 45+ departments.
  • Ground Breaking Ceremony (GBC): GBC 4.0 (2024) launched projects worth ₹10 Lakh Crore; GBC 5.0 is planned for Nov 2025.

Current Affairs Linkage (Jan 2026):

  • Cabinet Decision (Jan 7, 2026): The UP Cabinet approved a special incentive package for Mega Semiconductor Projects (Investment >₹3,000 Cr), offering 100% EPF reimbursement for local employees.
  • Mahakumbh 2025: The event is being used as a showcase for UP’s infrastructure, with AI-powered command centers and Green Energy zones powering the Mela area.
