About
The Arab League is also known as the League of Arab States (LAS).
It is a regional organization comprising Arab states in the Middle East and parts of Africa.
It was established in Cairo on March 22, 1945, in response to concerns about postwar colonial divisions and strong opposition to the establishment of a Jewish state on Palestinian territory.
Headquarter
It’s headquarters is located at Cairo, Egypt.
Official Language
It’s official Language is Arabic.
Purpose
Its primary aim is to promote arab interests.
The aim is to:
develop both national and international strategies
identify priorities for crime prevention.
Objective
Its main objective includes:
Strengthen and coordinate the political, cultural, economic, and social programs of member states.
Resolve disputes among member states or between them and third parties.
Provide military support to defend member states, an agreement reached in 1950.
Membership
It has total 22 members.
Founding members: Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen
Other members include Libya, Sudan, Tunisia, Morocco, Kuwait, Algeria, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Mauritania, Somalia, the Palestine Liberation Organization, Djibouti, and Comoros.
Observer Status: It is conferred to Brazil, Eritrea, India, and Venezuela.
Council
Structure: The highest body of the League is the Council, consisting of representatives from member states, usually foreign ministers, their representatives, or permanent delegates.
Decision-Making: Decisions are made on a majority basis.
Voting and Compliance: Each member has one vote.
Decisions are binding only on those states that voted for them, with no enforcement mechanism for compliance.
