  • Lake Michigan is the third largest of the five Great Lakes in North America.
  • It is the only Great Lake located entirely within the United States.
  • Boundaries: It is bordered by the states of Michigan to the east and north, Wisconsin to the west, Illinois to the southwest, and Indiana to the southeast.
  • It connects to Lake Huron through the Straits of Mackinac in the north.
  • It is part of the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Seaway system and supports international shipping and trade.
  • Other Great Lakes of America: The Five Great Lakes of America are Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario.
    • They collectively hold roughly 21% of the world’s surface freshwater.
    • Major Great Lakes cities: Chicago and Milwaukee on Lake Michigan; Toronto and Hamilton on Lake Ontario; Cleveland, Detroit, and Buffalo on Lake Erie; and Duluth on Lake Superior.
