About Veerangana Rani Avantibai Lodhi

- Birth: Rani Avantibai Lodhi was born on August 16, 1831, in Mankehni village in present-day Madhya Pradesh.
- Early life: She was married to Vikramaditya Singh Lodhi, son of Raja Laxman Singh of Ramgarh.
- After the death of Laxman Singh, she assumed control of Ramgarh state.
- Role in 1857 Revolt: She emerged as a prominent leader during the Revolt of 1857 and actively fought against British rule.
- Cause of rebellion: She strongly opposed Lord Dalhousie’s Doctrine of Lapse, which sought to annex Ramgarh.
- Military leadership: She was skilled in sword-fighting and horse-riding. She successfully expelled British administrators from Ramgarh.
- Key battle: She led her forces in the Battle of Kheri in 1857, where British troops were defeated.
- Martyrdom: In March 1858, she sacrificed her life on the battlefield and chose martyrdom instead of surrender.
- Commemoration: The Government of India issued a postal stamp in her honor in 1988, and many memorials stand in her name in Madhya Pradesh.
