News: On the occasion of World Health day 2026, a South Asia Hub of the Global Heat Health Information Network (GHHIN) was advanced by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW).

  • The Global Heat Health Information Network (GHHIN) is an independent, member-driven platform comprising scientists, practitioners, and policymakers.
  • It focuses on enhancing global capacity to protect populations from avoidable health risks caused by extreme heat in the context of a changing climate.
  • Launched in: It was launched in 2016 by experts from multiple founding institutions.
  • Led by: It is led by World Health Organisation (WHO), World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and  United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
  • Aim: It aims to strengthen the capacity of professionals, organisations, and governments to safeguard populations from the preventable health impacts of extreme ambient heat.
  • Goals: The Network accelerates heat action through three goals:
    • Connect and empower people and institutions to form multi-disciplinary partnerships to reduce heat risks.
    • Accelerate the generation of evidence, actionable knowledge, and standardized guidance and risk metrics.
    • Catalyze global, national and local policy and action to minimize societal consequences of heat impacts.
  • Key activities and programmes: The network supports capacity-building through:
    • Biannual Global Forum on Heat and Health
    • Dissemination of news, information, and knowledge via an online platform
    • Development of inventories of Heat Health Action Plans and case studies
    • Preparation of country profiles
  • Report: It publishes Global Synthesis Reports on Heat Health.

About South Asia Hub of the Global Heat Health Information Network (GHHIN)

  • The South Asia Hub of the Global Heat Health Information Network (GHHIN) is a regional initiative aimed at strengthening preparedness and response to extreme heat by translating scientific evidence into practical action.
  • Developed by: It is being developed by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) under the joint Climate and Health programme of the WHO and the WMO, with support from the Wellcome Trust.
    • India’s Participation: The Hub will work closely with the South Asia Climate and Health Desk at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology and the India Meteorological Department. 
  • Goal: Its main goal is to strengthen preparedness for extreme heat by converting scientific data into early warnings and actionable measures to protect communities.
  • It reflects a One Health approach, bringing together climate science, public health, and partnerships to deliver solutions for saving lives.
