  • Location: It is Asia’s largest man-made lake, located in Tehri Garhwal district, Uttarakhand.
  • Formation: Tehri Lake was formed when the waters of the Bhagirathi River were obstructed by the Tehri Dam, resulting in the submergence of Old Tehri town and several nearby villages.
    • Over time, as the reservoir filled, the valley transformed into a vast water body.
  • Source: It is fed by the Bhagirathi and Bhilangna rivers, which meet at the Tehri dam.
  • Height and depth: It is situated at an elevation of about 1,700 meters with depth of 262 meters approximately.
  • It holds nearly 3.54 cubic kilometres of water and spreads across 42–52 square kilometres of surface area.
  • It is surrounded by the Himalayan mountain ranges, dense pine forests, and terraced villages.
  • Significance: The lake also supports the functioning of the Tehri Dam, which has a large power generation capacity of about 2,400 MW and supplies electricity to multiple states in northern India.
    • Sport activities: It hosts different sports activities, such as Jet Skiing, Flyboarding, Knee Boarding, Banana Ride, Surfing,etc.

About Tehri Dam

  • It is a multi-purpose rock and earth-fill embankment dam in Uttarakhand.
  • Situated on: It is located on Bhagirathi river at 1.5km downstream of its confluence with river Bhilangana.
  • Height: The height of the Tehri Dam is approximately 260.5 meters.
  • Managed by: It is managed by Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) India Limited, a subsidiary of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Limited.
  • Installed Capacity: Its installed hydro capacity is 1,000 MW along with an additional 1,000 MW of pumped storage hydroelectricity.
