News: A new night frog species, Nyctibatrachus kali, has been identified in the Kali river basin of Karnataka’s central Western Ghats.
About Kali River

- Location: River Kali is located in Uttara Kannada District of Karnataka.
- In the old texts, it is also called “Kalindi” or “Kali Nadhi.
- Named after: It is named “Kali” for its colour attributed to the manganese-rich river bed.
- Origin: It originates near the village of Kushavali of Joida Taluka in the Western Ghats.
- The river flows through Uttara or North Karnataka for about 184 km before falling into the Arabian Sea.
- Tributaries: Its tributaries are Pandri, Kali, Tattihala, Vaki, Kaneri, Thananala, Kariholé, etc
- Catchment area: It has a catchment area of 5085.9 sq.km.
- Associated dams: Dams such as Supa Dam, Bommanalli, Kodasalli, and Kadra, generate hydroelectricity for Karnataka.
- Sports activities: The town of Dandeli, situated on the Kali River’s banks is Karnataka’s adventure tourism capital.
About Nyctibatrachus Kali

- A night frog species named Nyctibatrachus kali has been discovered in the Kali river basin of Karnataka’s central Western Ghats.
- The species is commonly known as the Kali night frog.
- Frogs of the genus Nyctibatrachus are endemic to the Western Ghats.
- Note: Around 70% of Nyctibatrachus species have highly restricted distributions.
- The Kali night frog is a cryptic species, meaning it closely resembles other frog species externally, but is genetically distinct.
