News: The India–UK Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory (GSCO) was formally launched by Coal & Mines Minister and UK’s Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.
About Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory (GSCO)
- The Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory (GSCO) is a data-driven platform to monitor global critical mineral supply chains, identify risks and support policymaking amid growing demand from clean energy and advanced manufacturing sectors.
- Initiative by: It is a joint initiative of TEXMiN, Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad and University of Cambridge.
- Aim: It is aimed at creating a data-driven platform for monitoring and analysing global critical mineral supply chains.
- Announced in: It was announced during the India–UK Prime Ministers’ bilateral engagement in October 2025 and subsequently formalized through a Research Collaboration Agreement signed in March 2026.
- It complements the India-UK Technology Security Initiative, under which the two countries are expanding cooperation in critical and emerging technologies, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, telecommunications and critical minerals.
- It will enable monitoring of global critical mineral supply chains, identification of supply risks and disruptions, generation of market intelligence, and informed decision-making for policymakers, industry and researchers.
- Significance: It would strengthen India’s capabilities in critical mineral supply chain intelligence, support evidence-based policymaking, and advance the objectives of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM).
- It will also serve as a valuable platform for strengthening India–UK cooperation in critical minerals and supporting informed decision-making for resilient, secure and sustainable global supply chains.
