News: Recently, a juvenile gharial was sighted in the Kekaidong River in West Karbi Anglong, which indicates an important sign of improving river health and successful biodiversity conservation efforts in Assam.

About Kekaidong River

  • The Kekaidong River flows through the state of Assam.
  • Origin: It originates in the Naga Hills of Nagaland and enters the Assam plains near Kulajan.
    • It flows through hilly and vast plain regions before joining the Gelabil River.
    • Gelabil River ultimately drains into the Brahmaputra River. 
    • It marks the border between Golaghat and Jorhat districts of Assam.
  • Length: Its length is 70 km.
  • Basin area: Its basin covers an area of about 1,112.86 sq. km.
    • The majority of the watershed is covered by agricultural land, mainly tea gardens and paddy fields.
  • Tributaries: Its major tributaries are Bojalkata, Chereli, Soraipani, Kasojan, Dholi, Doijan, Chelcheli, Ghiladhari and Khar Jan. 
  • Tributary of: It is one of the important southern sub-tributaries of the Brahmaputra River.
  • Historical Background: It was also known as Delsiri River in ancient times.
