News: Over 80 families were evacuated in Mizoram’s Lunglei district after the Khawthlangtuipui River overflowed following heavy rainfall.
About Khawthlangtuipui River
- The Khawthlangtuipui River is a transboundary river flowing through India and Bangladesh.
- It is also known as Karnaphuli River.
- Origin: It originates in the Lushai Hills of Mizoram.
- It flows 270 kilometres (170 mi) southwest through Chittagong Hill Tracts and Chittagong into the Bay of Bengal.
- Tributaries: Its key tributaries are Kawrpui River or Thega River, Tuichawng River, and Phairuang River.
- Ports: The river’s downstream section facilitates maritime navigation and provides access to the Port of Chittagong.
- Lake: The Kaptai Lake, situated in the north-east region of Bangladesh, was created by impounding an artificial earth-dam on the Karnaphuli river for hydropower generation. The dam is known as Kaptai Dam.
