News: The Indian Space Research Organisation is preparing to resume flight operations in September after a break of close to seven months, with the GISAT-1A Earth-observation spacecraft.

  • It is an Geo Imaging Satellite which is also referred to as EOS-05.
  • It is a replacement for GISAT-1 (EOS-03), which was launched in 2021 but failed to reach its intended orbit.
  • It is designed with a 10-year mission life.
  • It is one of two satellites currently parked at the Sriharikota spaceport. (other is NVS-03)
  • Purpose: Its primary purpose is to provide frequent imaging of large areas.
  • Application: It is useful for monitoring natural disasters, tracking agricultural activities, monitoring forestry and observing areas of interest at frequent intervals.
  • Significance: It will strengthen India’s Earth observation capabilities by providing large-area, frequently updated imagery
