News: The Union government told the Supreme Court that it had begun implementing the Police Modernisation Mission.

  • The Police Modernisation Mission is an umbrella scheme to modernize police forces over the next five years.
  • Nodal ministry: It is being overseen by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
  • Aim and intended agencies covered: It aimed at funding, modernizing, integrating and future-proofing the internal security capabilities of police forces, Central Armed Police Forces and Central Government security and intelligence agencies through targeted investments, reforms and technology-led transformation.
  • Focus: The focus of the scheme is to strengthen police infrastructure at cutting edge level by equipping with latest technology, weaponry, communication equipment etc. along with construction of police infrastructure such as police stations.
  • Fund: It has an outlay of ₹24,000 crore.
  • Note:  “Police” is a State subject as per the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution of India.
