Thinker of the day || James McGill Buchanan
– fundamentally changed how scholars analyze government behavior by bridging the gap between economics and political science.
- Rather than viewing politicians and state actors as selfless, benevolent servants of the public good, Buchanan applied basic economic principles to show that politicians, bureaucrats, and voters are motivated by self-interest just like private market actors.
Politicians seek re-election, bureaucrats seek larger budgets and job security, and voters support policies that yield direct individual benefits.
Buchanan argued that attempting to fix policy by asking politicians to “do better” is ineffective. Instead, reform must focus on changing the fundamental rules the constitutional framework.
Inspired by Swedish economist Knut Wicksell, Buchanan emphasized that the structural incentives built into constitutions determine outcomes, not the moral character of leaders.
Co-authored with Gordon Tullock, this landmark book provided the mathematical and logical foundations for constitutional democracy.
examined decision-making costs as decision-making rules approach unanimity, external costs (tyranny of the majority) decrease, but transaction costs (reaching an agreement) rise.Politicians do in many cases try to further what they think is the interest of the whole group, but in a sense, they’re just like the rest of us sometimes they’re motivated in terms of their own private interest, just like a businessman.
Keyword of the day || Budget maximization
