News: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched its next-generation navigation satellite, NVS-03, marking a significant step towards strengthening the country’s indigenous satellite navigation capabilities.

About NVS-03 Satellite

NVS-03 Satellite
Source – ISRO
  • NVS-03 is the 3rd satellite in ISRO’s second-generation navigation satellite series.
    • Its predecessors, NVS-01 and NVS-02, carried the other two indigenous atomic clocks.
  • Developed and launched by:Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)
  • Launch Vehicle: GSLV-F18 (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle)
  • It has been launched as part of India’s Regional Navigation Satellite System, which aims to provide navigation services across the country and up to 1,500 km beyond its borders.
  • Purpose: It is designed to ensure continuity and improve the availability of navigation services under the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC), India’s indigenous regional navigation system.
  • Features:
    • NVS-03 mission carries multiple atomic clocks, featuring one indigenously developed Rubidium atomic clock alongside a set of procured atomic clocks.
    • It also introduces the L1 frequency band, in addition to the existing L5 and S bands, enhancing the capabilities of the navigation system.
    • Weight: The satellite weighs approximately 2,232 kilograms.
    • Placement: It had been precisely injected into its intended transfer orbit.
  • Significance: It is expected to strengthen India’s independent positioning, navigation and timing capabilities for civilian, strategic and security applications.

About Atomic Clock

  • Atomic Clock: An atomic clock is a highly accurate timekeeping device that measures time using the natural vibration frequency of atoms, commonly Caesium-133.
  • Working: Satellites calculate a user’s position by measuring the time taken by radio signals to travel from multiple satellites to a receiver.
    • Even a nanosecond error can cause a positional error of about 300 m.
  • Importance: It provides precise and stable timing, essential for satellite navigation systems such as NavIC.
