News:

The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has discovered a prospective gold mine in the village of Ajjanahalli, Bengaluru

Important Facts:

  • The Ajjanahalli gold prospect is part of the Chitradurga greenstone belt, a linear, north-to-south sequence of volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Archean age around Chitradurga town.
  • Some of the world’s most important gold resources occur within such Archean greenstone belts.
  • In Karnataka, the Archean greenstone are potential hosts of gold mineralisation and have been historically explored and mined for gold, such as in the case of Kolar and Hutti.

Additional Facts:

  • Gold Mine sites in India – India has only 3 working gold mines (Kolar, Hutti and Uti in Karnataka, The Hirabuddini mines in Jharkhand and Ramgiri Gold Field in Anantpur district (Andhra Pradesh).)
  • The Archean Rock System:
    • The Archean of India corresponds to the first half of the Precambrian era
    • It contains the first formed rocks of the earth. These rocks in the peninsula are found primarily in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Rajasthan. The rocks are primarily gneisses and granites, having no marks of fossils.
