Guard against misuse, social media platforms told

  1. The parliamentary panel on information technology asked social media platforms such as Facebook,Instagram and WhatsApp to ensure that their platforms are not misused to (a)spread fake news (b)incite violence (c)pose a threat to India’s security or (d)to let foreign powers meddle in the upcoming general election.
  2. Fake news is the deliberate creation of factually incorrect content to mislead people for some gain.It is becoming an increasingly serious problem.Fake news is viewed as a serious threat to the democratic process.
  3. Social media in India is regulated by the Information Technology Act, enacted in 2000.The act categorically will hold you liable if you post any incriminating or illegal content or material on social media.It requires intermediaries,including users of social media,to exercise due diligence while they discharge their obligations under the law
