The Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement(LEMOA), which was signed between India and the US in August 2016 is an India-specific version of the Logistics Support Agreement (LSA).

It allows the military of each country to restock from the other’s base and Access supplies, spare parts and services from the other country’s land facilities, air bases, and ports, which can then be compensated.

During India-US joint exercises payments are done each time, which is a long and tedious process. That is why a mechanism for the same will be developed under this agreement. The system will be instituted for book-keeping and payments and officials, who will act as nodal points of contact, will be designated on both sides.

This agreement primarily covers only 4 areas, 1. port calls, 2. joint exercises, 3. training and 4. Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief. Any other requirement is required to be agreed upon by both sides.

This is extremely useful for Navy-to-Navy cooperation, since the US and India are cooperating closely in the Indo-Pacific.
