- According to a report,at least 300 rare Himalayan yaks have died of starvation in the high mountains in the northeastern Indian state of Sikkim.They have died after a harsh and prolonged winter.
- The domestic yak (Bos grunniens) is a long-haired domesticated bovid found throughout the Himalayan region of the Indian subcontinent, the Tibetan Plateau and as far north as Mongolia and Russia.It is descended from the wild yak.
- Yaks are a source of local milk, milk products, transportation and wool. The Government of India had established the ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak, in 1989 at Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh as a dedicated centre for research into yak husbandry.
