- Recently, the Ugratara Temple in Assam had organised a special darshan of 34 hatchlings of the rare black softshell turtle as these hatchlings will be reintroduced into the wild.
- The black softshell turtle(Nilssonia nigricans) is a species of freshwater turtle found in India (Assam) and Bangladesh.
- The black softshell turtle figures in the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List as “extinct in the wild” since 2002.
- These turtles are called “softshell” because their shell is light and flexible. This allows them to move more easily in open water, or in muddy lake bottoms.Having a soft shell also allows them to move much faster on land than most turtles.
- The major threats to the black softshell turtle are (a)consumption of turtle meat and eggs (b)silt mining (c)encroachment of wetlands and (d)changes in flooding patterns.
