UNSC blacklists Osama bin Laden’s son, seen as successor of Al Qaida leader al-Zawahiri

  1. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) 1267 committee blacklisted Hamza bin Laden, the son of Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, describing him as the “most probable successor” of Al-Qaeda.
  2. The UNSC 1267 Committee was established following resolution 1267 (1999).It is also known as the Al Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Committee.It was established for the purpose of overseeing the implementation of sanctions measures imposed on Taliban-controlled Afghanistan for its support of Osama bin Laden.However in course of time,the 1267 sanctions regime has been modified and strengthened by subsequent resolutions.
  3. The UNSC blacklisting of the designated individuals or entities will lead to (a)assets freeze which requires that all States freeze their assets without any delay (b)travel ban which means preventing the entry into or transit by all States through their territories and (c)arms embargo in which all States are required to prevent the direct or indirect supply of goods from their territories,aircraft,arms,technical advice,assistance,or training related to military activities.
