5 more states under One Nation, One Ration Card Plan

News: Consumer Affairs Minister approved the integration of five more States and Union Territories with the National Cluster under the One Nation, One Ration Card plan. These states are Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.

Facts:

  • One nation one ration card scheme envisages  inter-state portability of ration cards.
  • It enables the beneficiaries who are taking food grains under the Public Distribution System(PDS) to access the same benefits if they happen to migrate from one part of the country to the other.
  • States previously covered under One Nation, One Ration Card Plan: Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Kerala, Karnataka Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Telangana and Tripura

Ration cards: These are an official document issued by state governments in India to households that are eligible to purchase subsidized food grain from the Public Distribution System under the National Food Security Act.
