News:Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to abolish the reservation of two seats for the Anglo-Indian community in the Lok Sabha while extending the reservation of Scheduled Castes(SC) and Schedule Tribes(ST) by 10 years.
Facts:
About Anglo-Indians:
- The term Anglo Indian is defined as per the article 366 (2) of the Indian constitution as a person whose father or any of whose other male progenitors in the male line is or was of European descent but who is a native of India.
- As Anglo Indians are numerically an extremely small community and being interspersed all over India,the Anglo-Indians were provided reservations in legislative bodies.
- Article 331 of the Constitution provided that the President may,if he is of the opinion that the Anglo-Indian community is not adequately represented in the House of the People,nominate not more than two members of that community to the House of the People.
- In the same way for the state Assemblies,Article 333 has provided for the Governor to nominate the members.
- Article 334(b) extended the reservation of the Anglo Indian community in the Legislative bodies for 40 years through the insertion of this article.
- Subsequently,the reservation for the Anglo-Indian community was extended till the year 2020 through the 95th Amendment,2009.
