- The Centre has announced the creation of a separate railway zone in Andhra Pradesh. The new zone would be named South Coast Railway (SCoR). The headquarters of the new zone will be in Vishakhapatnam.
- As per item 8 of Schedule 13 (Infrastructure) of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, Indian Railways was required to examine establishing a new railway zone in the Andhra Pradesh. The act provided for the reorganisation of the state of Andhra Pradesh. It carved out a separate state called Telangana from the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh.
- The new zone would comprise the existing Guntakal, Guntur and Vijayawada divisions. Additionally, the Waltair division would be bifurcated. At present, Vijayawada, Guntur and Guntakal divisions are in the South Central Railway and Waltair division is in the East Coast Railway. At present, there are 16 railway zones in India.
