  • The Arab League is also known as the League of Arab States (LAS).
  • It is a regional organization comprising Arab states in the Middle East and parts of Africa.
  • It was established in Cairo on March 22, 1945, in response to concerns about postwar colonial divisions and strong opposition to the establishment of a Jewish state on Palestinian territory.

Purpose
  • Its primary aim is to promote arab interests.
  • The aim is to:
    • develop both national and international strategies
    • identify priorities for crime prevention.
ObjectiveIts main objective includes:

  • Strengthen and coordinate the political, cultural, economic, and social programs of member states.
  • Resolve disputes among member states or between them and third parties.
  • Provide military support to defend member states, an agreement reached in 1950.
Membership
  • It has total 22 members.
  • Founding members: Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen
  • Other members include Libya, Sudan, Tunisia, Morocco, Kuwait, Algeria, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Mauritania, Somalia, the Palestine Liberation Organization, Djibouti, and Comoros.
  • Observer Status: It is conferred to Brazil, Eritrea, India, and Venezuela.
Council
  • Structure: The highest body of the League is the Council, consisting of representatives from member states, usually foreign ministers, their representatives, or permanent delegates.
  • Decision-Making: Decisions are made on a majority basis.
  • Voting and Compliance: Each member has one vote.
    • Decisions are binding only on those states that voted for them, with no enforcement mechanism for compliance.
