- French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety has claimed that the blue light in LED lightning can damage retina. LED lights are the latest technology in energy efficient lighting
- It has added that chronic exposure can accelerate ageing of retinal tissue and can cause degenerative diseases such as macular degeneration. However, experts have called for more research to confirm the health concerns.
LED stands for light-emitting diode. It is a semiconductor device that emits visible light when an electrical current passes through it. It is essentially the opposite of a photovoltaic cell (a device that converts visible light into electrical current). In most lightning applications, some of the light from LED is converted into another colour using a phosphor.
