News: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare has recommended Olympic medallist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu for this year’s Arjuna Award.
About Arjuna Awards
- Arjuna Awards are one of the six categories of the National Sports Awards.
- It is given to sportspersons to recognize their outstanding achievements in the field of sports at international levels.
- It is awarded for consistent good performance over a period of four years.
- Institution year: It was instituted in 1961.
- Frequency: It is conferred every year by the President of India.
- Conferred by: It is conferred by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
- Categories: It is conferred in the disciplines falling under following categories:-
- Olympic Games/Asian Games/Commonwealth Games/World Cup/World Championship disciplines and cricket or any equivalent recognized international
Tournament. - Indigenous Games.
- Sports for physically challenged
- Olympic Games/Asian Games/Commonwealth Games/World Cup/World Championship disciplines and cricket or any equivalent recognized international
- It cannot be given to the same person more than once.
- It may be given posthumously if such an occasion arises.
- First awardee: The first Arjuna awards was conferred upon India’s football Olympian PK Banerjee who was among the 20 recipients of the Arjuna Award in its inaugural edition in 1961.
- Hockey player Anna Lumsden was the first woman Arjuna Award winner.
- The award is generally presented on National Sports Day (29 August).
- Prizes: Awardees receive a statuette, certificate, ceremonial dress and a cash prize of ₹15 lakh.
