News: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare has recommended Olympic medallist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu for this year’s Arjuna Award.

  • Arjuna Awards are one of the six categories of the National Sports Awards.
  • It is given to sportspersons to recognize their outstanding achievements in the field of sports at international levels.
  • It is awarded for consistent good performance over a period of four years.
  • Institution year: It was instituted in 1961.
  • Frequency: It is conferred every year by the President of India.
  • Conferred by:  It is conferred by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
  • Categories: It is conferred in the disciplines falling under following categories:-
    • Olympic Games/Asian Games/Commonwealth Games/World Cup/World Championship disciplines and cricket or any equivalent recognized international
      Tournament.
    • Indigenous Games.
    • Sports for physically challenged
  • It cannot be given to the same person more than once.
  • It may be given posthumously if such an occasion arises.
  • First awardee: The first Arjuna awards was conferred upon Indias football Olympian PK Banerjee who was among the 20 recipients of the Arjuna Award in its inaugural edition in 1961.
    • Hockey player Anna Lumsden was the first woman Arjuna Award winner.
  •  The award is generally presented on National Sports Day (29 August).
  • Prizes: Awardees receive a statuette, certificate, ceremonial dress and a cash prize of ₹15 lakh.
