News:The Attukal Pongala festival has begun in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
Facts:
About the Festival:
- It is held annually in Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram.
- The temple is popularly known as the Women Sabarimala as only women perform the ritual.
- Pongala, which means ‘to boil over’, is the ritual in which women prepare sweet payasam and offer it to the main deity ‘Bhagavathy’ also referred to as ‘Attukalamma’.
- In 2009, the Attukal Pongala festival entered the Guinness Book of Records as the largest gathering of women.
