News: Large stretches of the Bhavani River near Kooduthurai have been overrun by water hyacinth, raising concerns over irrigation and the river’s ecosystem.
About Bhavani River

- It is the second largest and perennial river in Tamil Nadu.
- Origin of river: It originates from Nilgiri hills of the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu.
- Course of the river: From western ghat, it flows through Kerala, passing through Silent Valley National Park.
- After traversing Kerala, it re-enters Tamil Nadu and finally joins the Cauvery River at Bhavani, near the Bhavani Sangameshwarar Temple.
- Drainage area: Its watershed drains an area of 6,200 sq. km spread over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.
- Tributaries: Its major tributaries are the West Varagar and East Varagar rivers, both of which originate in the Nilgiri Hills.
- Tributary of: It is a tributary of Kaveri /Cauvery River.
- Dams: The two dams situated on the River are Bhavanisagar Dam and Kodiveri Dam.
