News: People of Vijayapura, Kalaburagi, and Yadgir districts say they were cheated by Maharashtra over their share of water from Bhima River for many decades.

  • Origin: Bhima River starts from the Bhimashankar hills in Maharashtra.
  • It is also known also as the Chandrabhagha River.
  • States covered: It flows through Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana.
  • Merges into: It merges into the Krishna River at Kadlur (Raichur), Karnataka.
    • It is the largest tributary of the Krishna River.
  • It is bordered by the Western Ghats to the west, the Balaghat Range to the north, and the Mahadeo Hills to the south.
  • Tributaries: Its major Tributaries include rivers such as Sina, Nira, Indrayani River, Pavana River, Mutha River, Ghod River and Kukadi River.
  • Pilgrimage centre: Pandharpur which is an important pilgrimage center is situated on the right bank of the Bhima River.
  • Important dams: Ujjani Dam, Pawna Dam, Mulshi Dam, Ghod Dam, Kukadi and Yedgaon Dams.
