Brač Island and Adriatic Sea

News:  A massive wildfire on Croatia’s Brač Island located in Adriatic Sea, forced nearly 700 evacuations, while strong winds hampered firefighting efforts.

About Brač Island 

• Location: It is a rugged, mountainous island in the Adriatic Sea that is part of Croatia.
  • It is positioned just across Split (distance 12 km), the second biggest city in Croatia, separated by mainland by the Brac channel.
• Area: It covers an area of about 395 sq. km, making it one of the larger islands in the Adriatic.
• Highest Point: Its highest point is Vidova Mountain, rising to about 780 metres, making it the highest point among the Adriatic islands. 
• Climate: Its climate is characterized as Medireannean climate.
• Economy: Mechanised marble quarrying is an important economic activity and provides an export commodity. 
• It is famous for its white-pebble Zlatni Rat beach, limestone quarries, and excellent windsurfing conditions. 

About Adriatic Sea

• The Adriatic Sea is defined as a temperate semi-enclosed basin situated in the central Mediterranean Sea.
  • It acts as a geographic divider separating the Italian Peninsula from the Balkan Peninsula.
• Borders: It is bordered by Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Montenegro, and Slovenia.
  • Its southern boundary is situated between Albania and Italy’s Salento Peninsula.
  • The Strait of Otranto links it with the Ionian Sea to the southeast.
• It is surrounded by the Apennines, Alps, Dinarids, and Helenids mountain ranges.
• It is geographically divided into three basins, namely, the Northern Adriatic, the Middle Adriatic, and the Southern Adriatic.
• Major rivers: Reno, Po, Adige, Brenta, Piave, Soča/Isonzo, Zrmanja, Krka, Cetina, Neretva and Drini river flows into the sea. 
• Major seaports: Ancona, Bari, Brindisi, Dubrovnik, Rijeka, Split and Venice located along the Adriatic Sea.
