Why in News?
Recently, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed three new bills to combat deepfakes in political campaigns.
About the legislation
1. Aim: This legislation aims to safeguard the integrity of elections and protect voters from being misled by manipulated media, particularly deepfake content.
This legislation also intent to curb the deceptive use of AI in political ads and election-related content to prevent the erosion of trust in democratic processes.
2. Objective: It seeks to hold online platforms accountable and ensure they can prevent the distribution of misleading content that can influence voters.
Key Features of the California’s Anti-Deepfake Bill
Bills | Provisions |
AB 2655 – Defending Democracy from Deepfake Deception Act of 2024 | Large online platforms must block or label deceptive deepfake content about elections during specific periods before and after elections. Satire or parody is exempt from these restriction. |
AB 2839 – Elections: Deceptive Media in Advertisements | This extends the prohibition period for distributing AI-generated or manipulated election ads with deceptive content, empowering authorities to take legal action against distributors. |
AB 2355 – Political Reform Act of 1974: Political Advertisements: Artificial Intelligence | This requires political ads with AI-generated or altered content to clearly disclose this fact with a label like, “Ad generated or substantially altered using artificial intelligence.” |
