News: India is planning to expand the number of Geographical Indication (GI) products to scale up exports and secure premium prices in global markets. To compete with China, India is also planning to grant GI status to unique products under the One District One Product (ODOP).
1. Geographical Indication: It is a name or sign used on products which correspond to specific geographical origin and have qualities or reputations that are due to that origin.
2. Benefits associated with GI tag include revenue generation, greater export potential, quality assurance, promotion of local knowledge and traditions.
3. In India, the first GI tag was given to the Darjeeling Tea in 2004-05.
4. In India, a GI tag is issued under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
5. One District One Product (ODOP): This initiative aims to promote balanced regional development across all districts of the country by encouraging local entrepreneurship and economic development.
6. It focuses on selecting, branding and promoting one product from each district of the country.
7. ODOP has several benefits to offer: A) Holistic socio-economic growth across all regions B) Attracting investments C) Employment generation D) Ecosystem for innovation and technological use.
