News: The Supreme Court of India stayed a Rajasthan notification altering the boundaries of the National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary that freed 732 hectares along the Chambal River.

  • Origin: It is a perennial river which originates from Janapav hills, situated south of Mhow town near Indore, along the southern slopes of the Vindhya Mountain Range in Madhya Pradesh.
  • Course of river: From its source, it flows in a north-northeasterly direction through Madhya Pradesh, then passes through Rajasthan for a short stretch. 
    • It subsequently forms part of the boundary between Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh before turning southeastward and eventually joining the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh.
    • It ends at a confluence of five rivers, including the Chambal, Kwari, Yamuna, Sind, and Pahuj, at the Pachnada confluence near Bhareh in Uttar Pradesh.
    • It is bounded by the Vindhyan range (West-East-South) and the Aravalli range (NW).
  • Total Length: Its total length is 1024 km.
  • States covered: It flows through Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. 
  • Tributaries: Its main tributaries include the Banas, Mej (left bank) and Parbati, Kali Sindh, and Shipra (right bank) rivers.
  • Drainage: The Chambal and its tributaries drain the Malwa region of northwestern Madhya Pradesh.
    • Its largest tributary Banas River, drains southeastern Rajasthan.
  • Drains into: It is a right bank tributary of Yamuna River meeting it in Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Dams situated: Gandhi Sagar Dam, Jawahar Sagar Dam, Ranapratap Sagar Dam, Kota Barrage, Kotwal Dam, Pagara Dam and Pillowa Dam are the dams situated on it.
  • Protected area: The Chambal National Sanctuary extends along a 425 km stretch of the Chambal River which is India’s first and only tri-state protected riverine sanctuary.
