  1. Customs officials in China have destroyed nearly 30,000 world maps printed in the Country. This is because the maps did not show Arunachal Pradesh and Taiwan as part of its territory.
  2. China claims Arunachal Pradesh as South Tibet, a part of part of the Tibet Autonomous Region. China bases it claim on the argument that historical ties existed between the Tawang monastery in Arunachal Pradesh and the Lhasa monastery. Hence, the Chinese logic is that given Tibet is now part of China, Arunachal Pradesh should form a part of it.
  3. However, India claims Arunachal Pradesh as an inalienable part of India. China’s territorial claim on Arunachal Pradesh has been a major contentious issue between India and China.
  4. China also claims the island nation, Taiwan as a part of its territory. The controversy regarding Taiwan’s’ sovereignty dates back to 1949 when the Kuomintang (KMT) government lost power to Communist Party in China and its leaders had fled to Taiwan. People Republic of China (PRC) was established controlling mainland China and two special administrative regions, Hong Kong and Macau. On the other hand, KMT had established Republic of China (ROC) government in Taiwan and claimed to represent the whole of China.
  5. Republic of China (ROC) government represented China in the UN until it was replaced by the PRC in 1971. Till date, PRC regards Taiwan as a breakaway province which it has vowed to retake. While, Taiwan leaders considers Taiwan as a sovereign state. Presently, Taiwan has formal diplomatic ties with only a few countries who recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state.
