News: The Comprehensive Modular Survey on Education of the 80th round of the National Sample Survey (NSS) has revealed a significant urban-rural divide in school enrolment and expenditure, a rise in private coaching, and a heavy reliance on family funding for education.

Key Findings of CMS Education survey:

  • Enrolment Trends: Government schools remain the primary choice for students, accounting for 55.9% of total enrolments across India and for 66% of enrolments in rural areas.
    • However, in urban areas, the trend is reversed, with nearly 70% of students enrolled in private schools.
  • Household Expenditure: The average annual expenditure per student in a non-government school is approximately ₹25,002, which is nearly nine times higher than the average of ₹2,863 spent on a student in a government school.
  • Prevalence of Private Coaching: The survey highlighted the growing “shadow schooling” phenomenon.
    • Approximately 27% of students nationwide are taking or have taken private coaching.
    • This trend is more common in urban areas (30.7%) compared to rural areas (25.5%).
  • Funding Sources: Households are the main financiers of education in India.
    • The survey found that 95% of students reported that the first major source of their funding was from other household members.
    • In stark contrast, only 1.2% of students reported that government scholarships were their primary source of funding.
  • Course Fees: The data also showed that course fees were the largest component of education expenditure for households.
    • Only 26.7% of students in government schools paid course fees, while a massive 95.7% of students in non-government schools reported paying them.
