Constituency and Delimitation

Constituency refers to a group of voters in a specified area who elect a representative to a legislative body. Constituency also refers to geographical area which forms an electoral district.

Delimitation means redrawing boundaries of the various assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies based on the recent census to ensure uniform population across constituencies.

The job of delimitation is assigned to a high-power body called the Delimitation Commission; whose orders have the force of law.

Accordingly, the Parliament has enacted the Delimitation Commission Acts in 1952, 1962, 1972 and 2002 for this purpose.

Currently allocation of seats in the Lok Sabha to the states is frozen till 2026 to encourage population limiting measures in states.
